I think getting writer's block is sort of like getting the hiccups. It comes out of nowhere and it's sometimes really hard to get rid of. Yesterday I posed the question of how one should go about curing such a affliction and I was met with a slew of solutions. Some were food related (eat chocolate cake, have chips and guacamole, an offer to come over for Borcscht), some suggestions were a little stronger (wine, whiskey, bourbon) and some were more tame and healthy (walk, good workout at the gym, reading a good book or taking a long hot shower). It's been a couple of days and I'm still staring at a blank screen and it seems the words just don't want to affix themselves to it. Because I refuse to put up something for the sake of it and not something that I'm proud of, I'm taking a couple days off to rid myself of this little ailment, spend some time in my kitchen and get that creativity going.
See you in a couple of days and until then, let's hear your writer's block solutions!
I love the idea and I hate it all at once-miss my daily dose of the SBK!
ReplyDeleteWine and Whiskey work well for dealing with writers block (ah but not for curing it!) I think there is a difference. But what do I know ;) I think a walk works. So does reading. or just general downtime for the brain.
ReplyDeleteI second the wine cure. Writer's block and creative cooking blocks are the worst curses!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that your writers block will be cured after Friday :)
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with Genevieve!
ReplyDeleteI think what i'm coming to realize is, if you absolutely don't have to write at that moment, don't force it. Step away and attempt to come back to it with a fresh perspective. I'm definitely having a little case of it these past few weeks.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Elizabeth. Don't think about it. Meditation helps and I find that whenever I can't find the words, if I take break and take a hot shower, somehow I always get an aha moment!
ReplyDeleteThank you!! I'm starting to feel it come back...getting excited! Thanks for the advice!
ReplyDeleteI totally feel for you - it happens to me all the time.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it helps me a lot to just open a word document and type - just words, then sentences....not even about food, just free writing....It helps to get the writing juices going.
Besides that, I think occasional breaks are a good idea!
