Today started like any other day. I woke up, brushed my teeth, showered and took the T to work. I followed my usual routine of putting my things away at my desk and heading to the kitchen for a cup of coffee. In my still sleepy stuper, I mindlessly grabbed for the splenda and the flavored coffee creamer and started to make my coffee. Somewhere between pouring the coffee into the cup and taking the first sip, it dawned on me, today's October 1 and that marks the beginning of a month of non-processed foods. Dumping the coffee out, I started over, this time with just milk.
As I made my way back to my desk, I noticed that someone had left a Hershey's chocolate at my desk (nice tempting try, universe). I picked the chocolate up and pawned it off on one of my co-workers . And my day continued like that. Turning down the temptations of processed foods and reaching for unprocessed substitutes. Before I started this challenge, I thought I'd find myself feeling like I was giving something up. Instead, (and I'm hoping this cannot be attributed to a day 1 high of starting something new) I felt that the feeling of giving something up was replaced by something much more powerful; gaining control.
I can't wait to see what the next 30 days bring!
Want to see something cool? This little project made the New York Times!!

Yay! Sounds like the first day went well. Great job for sticking with it in spite of the temptations.
Nice idea. I've thought of things like this before, but have never followed though. I'll be curious to see how your journey goes!
Ps. I found your blog through the Boston Chowhounds site, so I'll be especially interested in any insights you have on local food.
Thanks Megan and Hoodsie, thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment! I'm actually headed to the Local Food Festival today so get ready...lots of local food to come!
You go girl, it sounds like you're on the right track of gaining control. Now I just need to practice that ;-)

Good luck! It will likely get difficult (unfortunately) but I'm sure you'll be happy with the overall changes that will surely take place :)
