Oreo Cake

I had been listening to Jen, the author of the fantastically delicious Beantown Baker blog, go on an on about Oreo cupcakes for a while now.  Whenever I turned to her for some advice on something yummy to make, without a doubt, she always suggested her Oreo cupcakes.  I can't say I blame her, Oreos in cake form? How can one pass that up?  I knew I would eventually get around to making these and the only question left was when.
Oreo Cake - cooling and waiting to be decorated
This past weekend I belatedly celebrated my friend John's birthday.  John and I were friends in high school and have just recently reconnected after finding out that we don't live all that far away from each other.  I thought that his birthday was a great excuse to finally make Jen's Oreo cupcakes, only instead of cupcakes, I made them into a cake, mainly because I have all these fun decorating tools in my culinary school kit and I wanted to try it out!

About the recipe: the recipe itself is pretty straightforward and easy.  I just threw everything into my mixer and the toughest part was cutting up all those bits of Oreos and then figuring out how I wanted to decorate the cake.  I ended up pulverizing Oreos and pushing them up into the sides of the cake and then I dyed some of the icing blue and piped stars all around the boarder and decorated the top.  I was happy with the outcome of the cake and it made me really excited to get to the cake decorating classes in culinary school.  I hate baking but I just love the creativity of decorating.  There's just something about swirling around icing on a blank cake and dressing it up to make it special.

The results were great and it came out really well, with a moist and delicious cake that had ample pieces of crunchy Oreo bits running all through it.  I would totally make this again and I also want to make them in cupcake form next time.

That's pretty awesome. Two years ago, I made my version of an oreo cake. But it was an oreo in cake form. My friend and I made two dark chocolate round cake layers and made a cream cheese frosting with oreo crumbs that we applied in a thick layer between the two cakes. It was epic. I'll show you pictures sometime.

You are such a decorating pro already. This cake is something I'd like to eat right now. I love Jen's idea for putting oreos on the bottom of the cupcakes - did you do the same for the cake?

You always say you are a bad baker. I don't believe it for one minute. Maybe from now on I can do the baking and you can do the decorating. I suck at decorating cakes. Glad you guys enjoyed the cake. Like I always say, it's a favorite in our house!
