Is Boston's Best Burger at Lineage?

I'm noticing a trend here with burgers this year.  It seems the spots that aren't super well known for burgers have some of the best and I have been repeatedly disappointed by those that have a lot of buzz (I'm looking at you Cafeteria as well as you, Oak Room..).  Maybe the best burgers in Boston are in the most unexpected places?

Take for example this week's burger.  It wasn't actually planned that we'd end up at Lineage for burgers and it was sort of on a whim, not something carefully researched like most of our burger destinations.  I'm familiar with Lineage's great reputation but hadn't heard much from them on the burger front, thus, my expectations weren't that high.

Piled high with thick-cut caramelized red onions and topped with cheddar cheese (the burger, $14, comes standard with blue cheese but that's the one cheese I'm not in love with) and is served on a freshly house-made soft and sweet brioche bun, lightly toasted but still so soft.  It was just the perfect bun for the incredibly juicy, well seasoned and spot-on medium rare burger.  Getting back to the cheese, it doesn't look like a lot of it is happening here but I was shocked at how well the flavor of it really stood it's own against all of the other flavors.  The whole balance of the sweet and salty played so well together and made for a tasty burger.

The fries I particularly enjoyed, hot and extra crispy on the outside (an audible crunch could be heard) and soft and full of potatoey flavor in the center.  They were presented on the plate in a little basket (extra thought and care goes a long way. Even if it's just a simple basket) and served alongside a hearty garnish of assorted pickled vegetables.  This might be one of the best burgers in Boston and it is definitely my favorite s so far in 2011.

I LOVE lineage! Never had their burgers but we love a simple date night just sitting at their bar - amazing cocktails and a super knowledgeable bartender. And those salted rolls are heavenly!

I'm not a burger eater, but I love the fries and all of the other food at Lineage. My husband got the burger the last time and really enjoyed it.

I love the fry basket too, keeps your fries out of the burger juice. And those fries look delicious! Perhaps the places you don't expect to have great burgers have them because your expectations are lower to begin with? Glad you found a top burger!
